How Heat Gets Into Your Home Through Windows

Windows are the weakest link in your home's thermal envelope. A standard double-pane window has an R-value of about R-2 to R-3. Your insulated wall is typically R-13 to R-21. That difference matters a lot when the Florida summer sun is beating against your west-facing glass at 95 degrees with high humidity.

The technical measure that tells you how much solar heat enters through a window is called Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, or SHGC. It's a number between 0 and 1 — lower means less heat getting in. Florida homeowners run their air conditioning roughly 9 to 10 months out of the year in meaningful capacity. That's a long cooling season compared to most of the country, which is precisely why the payback math on window film works better in Florida than it does in, say, Connecticut.

The Real Numbers: What Film Saves on a Typical NE Florida Home

Let me walk through a realistic scenario for a 2,000 square foot home in St. Johns County or Duval County with single-story construction and a significant amount of west and south-facing glass — which describes a very large percentage of homes built in this area since 2000.

Research from ENERGY STAR's window and film efficiency data shows that window film in hot climates can reduce cooling loads by 5 to 15 percent depending on the home's window-to-wall ratio and the film's performance specifications. For a home in NE Florida spending $200 to $280 per month on electricity during peak summer months, that translates to monthly savings of $15 to $40 during the cooling season.

More specifically, here's how I think about it with actual film specifications:

  • Baseline home electricity cost (Jun–Sep average): $240/month
  • Estimated cooling load percentage: 55–60% of total bill in summer
  • Cooling cost attributable to windows (typically 25–30% of cooling load): ~$36–$43/month
  • Heat reduction from quality solar film (50–60% reduction in solar gain): savings of $18–$26/month during peak cooling months
  • Annual savings across the full cooling season (9 months at varying loads): $120–$200/year

These numbers are conservative. Homes with larger window areas, more west-facing exposure, or older single-pane windows will see higher savings. Homes with new triple-pane low-E windows already installed will see lower incremental gains from film.

The Payback Period Calculation

A professional residential window film installation for a 2,000 square foot home in NE Florida typically runs $1,200 to $2,500 depending on the number and size of windows being filmed, film product selection, and access difficulty. Premium ceramic films for maximum performance cost more than entry-level films; the performance difference is real, and the warranty protection on quality products extends the value.

Using our conservative savings figure of $150/year and a mid-range installation cost of $1,800:

Payback period = $1,800 ÷ $150/year = 12 years

Using more aggressive savings of $200/year and a lower installation cost of $1,400:

Payback period = $1,400 ÷ $200/year = 7 years

Most quality residential film comes with a manufacturer's lifetime warranty. You're looking at a product that will be on your windows for 15 to 20-plus years. Even at the conservative end, the economics work. What Film Type Makes the Most Sense for Energy Savings?

Prioritize TSER (Total Solar Energy Rejected)

This is the single most useful number for energy savings. It accounts for UV, infrared, and visible light heat contribution. Look for 50% TSER or higher for maximum impact on cooling loads. Films in the 55–70% TSER range deliver the best energy performance.

Focus on Problem Windows First

West and south-facing windows in Florida take the most direct solar load. If budget is a constraint, prioritizing those exposures first gives you the most savings per dollar spent. East-facing windows matter in the morning; north-facing windows in Florida contribute relatively little heat load.

Ceramic vs. Dyed Film

Ceramic nano-particle films maintain their performance over the full life of the product. Cheaper dyed films often fade and lose rejection capability within a few years, degrading your energy savings over time. Paying more upfront for ceramic technology is the better economic decision when payback period is a key consideration.
